Weight Loss Programs

Talk about an industry that won’t be going anywhere anytime soon. Likely since the dawn of day folks have been trying to sculpt their body to fit in with the definition of beauty for their respective era. Granted, in Greek and Roman times being a tad rotund was desirable. Going for that 6-pack, hard body look might have worked against you on a Saturday afternoon at the beach. But for the rest of humanity, at least over the past 100 or so years, the goal for most has been the same – lean and healthy.

Cue the weight loss program. Gaining weight is easy and losing it is hard. Hence, the plethora of programs out there for one to choose from. Now, regardless of the program there are a handful of facts to keep in mind if losing weight is a goal. First, sugars and starches need to be cut dramatically. Over time hunger levels will go down and you’ll end up eating fewer calories. Your body will also turn to stored fat to feed off instead of burning carbs for energy.

Second, protein, fat and vegetables are your friends. On the protein side, meat, fish/seafood and eggs are the go-to sources. Some great vegetable options are spinach, tomatoes, kale, lettuce, cabbage, cucumber, etc. Finally, fat. We know, you want to burn fat, not ingest it. But there are bad fats and good fats and we’re talking the good ones here – butter, olive oil or avocado oil.

Lastly, lift weights or increase the cardio. By lifting weights you’ll burn tons of calories and build muscle. Cardio speaks for itself – a calorie burner that also increases the heart-rate and get’s the blood pumping. A 30-minute cardio jog per day is a fantastic addition to any healthy lifestyle.

Now we’ve come to what you’re waiting for. “I need a program!” We hear you, and here are the most popular:

Weight Watchers o A dominant, lean and mean monster in the weight loss field. A favorite among nutritionists, Weight Watchers puts members on a tight plan and also delivers tips and tools to keep folks from falling off the proverbial wagon. - Noom o A relatively new player on the scene, Noom includes a sprinkling of behavioral psychology into their easy to use app, helping clients to break bad habits all the while eating healthy and exercising regularly. The approach is rooted in eliminating the bad in one’s life which lies at the core of bad eating habits or unhealthy living. - The Mayo Clinic Diet o Finally, if you don’t require as much guidance that comes with Weight Watchers and Noom, the Mayo Clinic Diet will point you in the direction of how to eat and via their app you can track your progress. This is a “self-starter” approach so be forewarned. If you need some hand-holding this isn’t the one for you.
