Riffbuddy's Guide to Hiring Movers

Riffbuddy's Guide to Hiring Movers

The process of moving can be a daunting task. Most people attempt to circumvent the mental and physical demand, as well as the time moving entails, by hiring professional movers. However, the task of finding movers who can ensure your move is as hassle-free as you planned proves to be a difficult task in itself. Hiring the wrong moving company can complicate your move more than you’d ever imagined. Paid a substantial deposit and the movers never showed up? Movers arrived 4 hours later than the scheduled time? Driver went to “1st Avenue” instead of “1st Street,” and now your possessions are a whole town over? Moving company holding your property hostage until you pay an astronomical surcharge on your originally quoted price? These are not unusual occurrences. That’s why our team at Riffbuddy have put together a helpful guide to assist you in making your move easier. We’ve created a list of things you should consider when selecting a moving company.

1. Do you really need movers? If you’re moving two blocks over from your current location, you may want to consider bribing some friends (or family? or neighbors?) with dinner and drinks to help you out. It may take more time for you to organize a move with a company, rather than with a few reliable friends. 2. Make a list of the specifics: Is there a specific day you need to move? Do you prefer to move on the weekend or weekdays? Over a span of a few days? What time? Do you want them to deliver AND unpack boxes? These are important factors to have down before you begin contacting moving companies. You can quickly rule out a company who won’t be available if you need your move done on a specific date. 3. Before you even go to Google, get recommendations from people you trust: Ask your family, your friends, your neighbors, your Facebook friends and even your real estate agent. They can speak first-hand about their experiences with particular companies, answer specific questions, and are more likely to be candid with you about the recommendations. However, don’t let a referral stop you from doing your homework. Just because a friend found a particular company to be fitting for his/her needs, doesn’t mean you will too! 4. Do your homework: It’s time to start looking. Look for moving companies in your phone book. Check out online review sites like Riffbuddy for reviews from verified customers. Screen these companies by checking the BBB, or other consumer sites. Schedule an in-home estimate with a few companies. Communicate with them exactly what you need and get confirmation that they can do it. Get a DETAILED estimate in writing. These in-home estimates with help you ballpark the price of your move and compare offerings from multiple companies. 5. Thoroughly review and compare your estimates: These documents should be detailed in describing not only the type and quantity of possessions you are moving, but alsothe responsibilities of the company, the distance between locations, the projected date and time, and any additional services or supplies you OR the moving company is providing. This could include insurance and tolls. 6. Choose a mover: You should feel confident in choosing a mover because you’ve now gathered all of the necessary information. Reconfirm with each of the contenders that they can commit to the day and time that you need. Reconfirm their responsibilities as a company. Ask about their policies for situations in which either party needs to cancel or reschedule.  Ask about any penalties for a move taking longer than anticipated. Know what you’re getting and ask questions if you’re not entirely sure.
