Depending on your age getting used to the notion that one can accomplish nearly the same objective online as in-person is a bit wild. After all, as humans we’ve been told for hundreds of years that the human interaction, face-to-face, is the most effective way to get anything done. We’re social creatures after all, enjoy the process and when someone enjoys something then odds are getting said thing accomplished will be more streamlined.

Well, this has indeed worked for hundreds of years. People got in front of each other, in rooms, negotiated, communicated, and many things were accomplished. Simply look around, most everything you see is thanks to human collaboration. But with the advent of the Internet, not only is this notion being challenged, it is now proven that things can get done without having to sit in front of another human. Your laptop is all that’s needed in most cases, and education is no different.

If you’ve had your eye on getting an accounting degree, in 2020 it is useful to consider the online option. An accounting degree (traditional or online) is one of the five most marketable degrees in the world. Nearly every business needs one, and for those who enjoy number crunching and job stability, accounting is for you. You can go the corporate route, pursue government jobs as an analyst or auditor, or even become a self-employed accountant. The main similarity of a traditional on-campus degree and an online degree is the content. Don’t think that with the online option you’ll be receiving easier curriculum. No way, Jose! Expect to find courses covering accounting principles, general accounting, managerial accounting, financial accounting, auditing, taxation laws, information systems, the whole shebang.

So, the million-dollar question, why go online? Well, if you are an adult looking to either transition into accounting or simply change careers completely, going back to school full-time, on-campus, can be both intimidating and/or financially impossible. Many adults require flexibility in returning to school because they have current jobs that need to be attended to and/or responsibilities (family, kids, etc). Because the degree is online it is naturally more flexible and amenable to your schedule.

Another reason why some folks navigate to the online option is cost. There are no brick and mortar buildings with an online program, no parking lots to maintain, cafeterias, dormitories, none of it! Granted, there also aren’t any football games or all the other exceptional perks of physically attending a university, but you can’t have all your cake and eat it to, you already know that. The financial benefit though is clear, and you will save a ton of cash pursing an online accounting degree.

So now let’s get to some winners. The consensus, best online accounting degree is through the University of Memphis (UofM Online). Their 120 credit Bachelor of Business Administration with a major in accounting is a hot degree where applicants typically have a high school diploma or GED and good SAT or ACT scores. Another highly respected online accounting degree comes from the University of Minnesota. The catalogue at Minnesota is rumored to be the most extensive and they also allow for in-person-learning and meet-ups close to campus.

A cool option for those seeking to break out of the mold and pursue something more flexible. Still a solid degree, no doubt, just now a bit more personalized to your schedule (and budget).
