Natural Cleaning Supplies
Most of us associate the word “nature” with purity. After all, we’ve invented and manufactured a heck of a lot of stuff over our time on Earth, and while some of those things have been fantastic (iPhones, gummy bears, fanny-packs, and SUVs come to mind) there is a soft spot for something all-natural. The interesting thing when speaking on “natural” things or products is poisonous mushrooms are also part of nature, as are a host of other things that will kill you in a heartbeat. So just because something is “natural,” doesn’t necessarily mean it’s good or a positive addition to your life.
With that said, however, lots of folks gravitate to all-natural products to avoid chemical exposure. In the cleaning supply world, this is becoming more and more common. Traditional cleaning products call on synthetic-based chemicals to do things like “de-grease” or “whiten,” and they frequently carry a fragrance. Products that are all-natural or “green” avoid these chemicals which are frequently chlorine, triclosan, ammonia, and phthalates. Chemicals can inflict a biological effect on the body. They have the ability to impact the immune, respiratory, hormone, and endocrine systems. Now, if they were harmful in all cases, regulators would have snatched them off the market long ago. But there are cases where someone might be predisposed to a certain illness and exposure to said chemicals simply exacerbates the illness. People with asthma, for example, will likely suffer if exposed in a prolonged nature to cleaning product fumes. Respiratory issues are a major concern, where fumes from daily cleaning supplies can do a lot of damage in a short amount of time.
If you’re considering going all-natural, we recommend trying some products out first and judging the results. Bon Ami Powder Cleanser is a popular pick. It’s an all-around cleaner that’s been around since 1886. Bon Ami consistently receives rave reviews from organic and natural cleaning watchdog groups and can be used on glass as well as surfaces to both shine and get rid of tough stains.
Dr. Bronner’s Castille Liquid Soap is certified organic as well as biodegradable. Mixing it with hot water produces a nice result on floors, and if you’re looking for an effective de-greasing paste, combine some baking soda and voila! Puracy Green Tea & Lime Natural Multi-Surface Cleaner is made from water and plants and provides a gentle yet super effective spray that can be employed on over 250 distinct surfaces. That’s a lot of surfaces! Concrobium Mold Control Spray does just what it sounds like - controls against the nasty influx of mold, especially in the bathroom. You can use this product on areas around the shower caulking as well as on windowsills and washing machine gaskets. The thing most folks rave about with this product is there is no smell whatsoever.
There are plenty more where these came from, but again, the best first step is trying a couple out and taking it from there. Cutting all chemicals out of your life is tough. But with cleaning supplies, there are some fantastic options and it can be done.
