Lawn Care Companies

Keeping up your lawn is not only good practice, but your neighbors will thank you for it as well. Home values rise when the whole block looks great, so do yourself and your fellow street-mates a favor – keep that lawn looking good!

Believe it or not, when it comes to choice, picking an appropriate lawn care company is not a quick decision. First, they tend to be a dime a dozen. It’s a relatively inexpensive business to get into, the barriers to entry are quite low, so choices abound which is both a positive and a negative.

On the positive side, more choice tends to equate to lower costs. Companies and small providers are readily competing thus driving down costs for us as clientele. You’ve got folks in run-down, dilapidated trucks, unreliable equipment and unsafe trailers. On the other end of the spectrum, full outfits with multiple employees, fancy logos, new equipment and exceptional customer service. But the one thing to remember – you pay for what you get.

A professional lawn care company offers a range of options, typically housed in one menu but also offering a la carte items as well. As with some other posts we’ve written on here, inquiring to the company’s qualifications is highly suggested, some background on the owners, licensing, knowledge of pesticides, fertilizer, etc. Nowadays these are hot button items and a company worth its weight in gold can address them all quickly (if they’re good).

The most common lawn care companies are mow and go crews. These guys and gals swoop in, trim, mow and blow the walks in little time. They are then out (hence the go part). Outfits like this usually work in teams of 3 and the good ones will offer fertilization and grub control, but you’d be lucky to find it. Now, if you don’t need a whole lot of landscaping work, mow and go outfits are ideal. You might be able to get recommendations, but many are rather informal so go with your gut. If they have a professional appearance, clean work trucks and up-to-date equipment, these are all good signs.

The “chemical brothers” in the lawn care game are larger, more established providers, dedicated to providing comprehensive, year-round service, and as the title suggests, they know their fertilizer, herbicides and pesticides. When chemicals are utilized it is good to keep licensing in mind. Most states have very rigid laws when it comes to working with chemicals and providers should not have a problem providing clients the requisite paperwork. Big name companies lack the personal touch however, so if you’re seeking a gardener you can also share a glass of lemonade with, chemical brothers won’t be your thing.

Lastly, organic lawn care. All the rage, organic lawn care is for the more discerning customer. They are typically accredited or certified companies and count on some formal training as well. Common phrases in organic lawn care are “organic-based” or “green.” Beware however, as it’s very easy to claim organic lawn care status just for the potential sale. You will really need some sound references before paying close to double (normal for organic lawn care), so this one will take some time.

To wrap it up, keep your lawn up! No excuses in 2019, weeds and what not are bad mojo, take note.
