While we’re going to talk kitchen remodeling companies here, there are some extremely useful points to cover first that will help in choosing an appropriate provider. In 2020 one thing that is nearly ever-present in most kitchens (space provided), is the kitchen island. A real gamechanger for all you cooking buffs out there, the island provides yet another fabulous spot to prep, cut, chop, mix, whip, drink and converse on. But clearance is a big issue, so pay attention.

If you do not have at least 36 inches of clearance, any reputable kitchen remodeling company will tell you to reconsider installing an island. A clearance of 42 inches is recommended, and 48 inches is ideal. Next, don’t try and do the electrical work yourself unless you have “kitchen remodeling experience” on your resume. If that phrase cannot be found on your resume, electrical work should be left up to the professionals. We say this because this is an area that many are susceptible to try and cut costs on. It’s understandable, hiring someone to connect some wires sounds like a waste of money, but it is not all that easy and being out of code will kill you in the long-term, especially in the event of a fire or worse.

Some of the more common code violations are failing to provide two 20-amp appliance circuits, powering up the lights with the wrong amps, not protecting the countertop circuits with a GFCI (a big no-no), and this last one is particularly egregious and something a good contractor will not forget – not installing enough outlets along the counter. For example, no spot in general can be farther than 24 inches from a given receptacle.

Another important item to consider before progressing forward is putting together a schedule and sticking to it. A good remodel is strategically choreographed, so scheduling the electrician, plumber tilesetter, etc is a game onto itself. A kitchen remodeling company will only get you so far, it’s necessary to also know what’s going on and being able to communicate it accordingly. The average fee for a custom contractor is $100 to $200. Some companies will easily hit the $800 per hour fee, and of course you can find a ton for $50 as well. A good tip – roughly 10% of the overall kitchen modeling budget will go to pay for labor. The rest are materials and appliances. So, if you choose to outsource the purchasing of said items to the contractor know that by doing it yourself you could save some serious cash. Just be sure you know what’s needed.

The best way to find a provider is always via recommendations, but there are plenty of online sites that will help you filter through local companies and their online reviews will tell you everything you need to know. A typical remodeling package will include wall painting, flooring, countertops, new cabinets and new appliances. Don’t freak out when you see total figures inching north of $40,000. This is a big expense so don’t take this decision lightly.
