Illinois Electricity Companies
Welcome to Illinois, the Land of Lincoln, the prairie state, the heart of America and a real microcosm of the States. Illinois has everything, from a world-class city in Chicago to small cornfields and quaint towns. It is the leading producer of corn and soybeans and counts on access to the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River. But perhaps one of the best things about Illinois is it is one of 15 states where energy is deregulated. This means you can choose your energy supplier instead of being defaulted into what the rest of the 35 states default you into – a monopoly-based supplier.
Whatever your views on this, Illinois is deregulated so let’s dig into what this means for the buyer. When energy (or anything) is deregulated this means multiple suppliers can compete for your business. Some of the factors you should consider are the contract length, prices and renewable energy mix. Now, picking a plan is not all that difficult. You pick, and they do the rest. If you already count on a supplier, the transition should be seamless. By this we mean no interruption in power, so you won’t even need to be home when said switch occurs. But don’t take our word on this, do ask!
A common question when shopping for an electricity company in Illinois is whether you will get another meter or can remain with your current one. For the most part the answer is no. Your new power will go through the same meter and the only difference is whom you’ll pay. With that said, there are exceptions, but again, should the meter be swapped out this is something that you don’t need to be present for.
Coming in high on the list of Illinois electricity companies is Direct Energy. With an overall satisfaction score of nearly 5 stars, Direct Energy is known for being an easy and simple choice to grasp. Serving roughly 4 million folks, Direct Energy gives customers the tools to smartly measure their consumption and take the steps to save where possible. Another company that ranks high in Illinois is Spark Energy Gas and Electricity. Providing natural gas and electricity to businesses and homes, competitive pricing is front and center with Spark. The company receives rave reviews (perhaps that’s a bit aggressive, nobody really raves about electricity, but reviews are full of thought and that’s worth mentioning). Customer service is a strong suit with Spark, and they invest a lot in this arena.
The list goes on from here and a simple Google search will get you to where you need to go. Honestly, it is nice to be able to choose when it comes to your electricity provider. There is something a bit disconcerting when going into any relationship (electricity company, cable provider, etc) locked in with no options. If you live in Illinois, take full advantage, as the rest of the country isn’t in the same boat.
