Furniture Stores

Furniture Stores

It’s tough to trace the origins of the furniture industry, mainly because furniture has been around since the dawn of days. Man and woman have always needed tools, shelter, and then fire to survive. Their rudimentary homes were populated with chairs and tables, and even beds. As time progressed, these physical items became more valued, and as such, held a more prominent position in the home. When man went from hunter and gatherer to a more stable lifestyle, literal homes began to take shape and furniture was front and center.

Furniture stores are big draws. The array of styles and makes and models is truly mind-boggling. You could spend days on end perusing both physical and online stores, and never come across the same thing twice. We’d like to take the time here to provide some more alternative furniture store options, as opposed to simply running down the top five in terms of gross sales. These stores are coming up fast, and some are encroaching on mainstream status. We can nearly guarantee you’ll find a personal match with at least one of these.

Schoolhouse Electric

This store got their reputation from those super cool, throwback lighting designs. They were so cool that Schoolhouse Electric became pigeon-holed in many ways. Yet, this furniture store is so much more than simply vintage lighting fixtures. Based out of Portland, Schoolhouse houses a range of furniture options – everything from kitchen accessories to couches, beds and side-tables. Their lighting fixtures remain a staple, but bedding and bath is a growing segment onto its own.

Industry West

Industrial style is an acquired taste. Going 100% industrial can be a tough pill to swallow, but mix it with a more modern style and now you have some options. Industry West peddles an array of décor, lighting, furniture and more. Most of it looks like it belongs in an urban loft, but that’s cool for at least a handful of rooms in most homes. Their inventory is tight, so if you see something, best to buy sooner than later.

Apt2B

A cool name, there’s no two ways about it. We’ve all likely lived in an apartment at some point in time. Many of us still do! If you have occupied unit 2B, you must feel a special affinity to this store. One of the well-known things about Apt2B, however, has nothing to do with their furniture - it’s their delivery fees. Extraordinarily cheap, Apt2B can outfit your home with classic modern seating, turn of the century bedframes, and eccentric window treatments affordably and uniquely. Not much more to ask for here.

Design Within Reach

There are affordable furniture stores, and then stores like Design Within Reach. Fair warning, the prices here can be a bit over the top. Iconic designers such as Hans Wegner, Ray Eames, and Arne Jacobsen have all blessed Design Within Reach with their unique designs, and the designs on everything from patio furniture to bespoke armoires is certainly available here. We just don’t know if it is “within your (financial) reach.”

HAY

And lastly, who doesn’t enjoy a little Danish styling in their home? HAY is Danish to the core, but has added some colorful twists. Nearly every piece you’ll find at HAY definitely has its own personality. This is quirky furniture that is also highly functional and practical. Sort of like IKEA, but with more pizzazz.

If you want to really bring your home style to another level, check out any of these furniture stores on the list. There is no better time than the present!
