Clothing Subscription Box

Prior to the clothing subscription box, the subscription box hit the scene in 2004 and was originally known as the Sampler. It offered an array of products from artists (web-based), magazines and crafters. One of the more popular subscription boxes was Granny’s Attic of Mobile that began offering services off their website. If artistic painted ponies were your thing, Granny’s was ready and waiting. Fast-forward to 2011 and box services were growing by a shocking 50 to 100 percent … monthly!

Birchbox was valued at $485 million just a handful of years ago. The company launched a novel model that provided a loyal, and growing set of clients, personal care products. The chosen samples were such a hit that 400,000 monthly subscribers waited patiently for the arrival of their cherished Birchbox box every month. Much of the appeal of Birchbox and others like them was the discovery of products folks would not have purchased or known about earlier. While we all enjoy what we know and like, getting introduced to something new (music, products, people, etc) is just plain fun.

As you can likely imagine, clothing subscription boxes can be male or female oriented. On the female side, Rent the Runway is quite popular, where for $89 per month people can rent cocktail dresses for a variety of functions. Bump that monthly amount up to $159 per month and you have access to an unlimited number of rentals. Imagine a rotating wardrobe, ever-changing with no commitment to said piece of clothing outside of returning it unsoiled and in good shape. Prices include shipping, dry cleaning and insurance.

At Frank and Oak women of all ages have immediate access to chic seasonal pieces that can be customized depending on the monthly subscription amount. This Canadian company offers a vast marketplace for monthly subscriptions as well as one-time purchases. A fun, first step with Frank and Oak is filling out a short survey that will result in a portfolio of items according to your preferences. Prior to receiving the first box an email is sent that prompts the client to preview everything before it is sent out. Shipping is always free, and you are then given seven days to try everything on, keep what you’re into and send back what you don’t want.

On the men’s side, it is widely accepted that Trunk Club is the best all-around subscription box for guys. Owned by Nordstrom, thus giving the company access to hundreds of designers throughout the department store chain, after an initial questionnaire/survey the user is delivered a box of stylish and ready to wear gear from name brands you trust (and want!). At Menlo Club, for $60 per month you will receive footwear, shirts, pants, ties, shorts, it is truly endless. Known for its cutting-edge taste and style (that can be a win or a miss every now and again), Menlo Club is great for folks seeking more style than the average guy. The company does not do returns so what you get is what you get!

This is a fun niche to jump into and completely reasonable from a cost perspective. Get your box today!
