Modeling and Talent Agencies

Modeling and Talent Agencies

Ever look and mirror and think, “Brad Pitt has nothing on this face.” Of course you have, and you know what, you might just be right. But odds are, you’re no Brad Pitt, in the looks nor the bank account department. But you still might be a good looking guy or gal and making a living in the modeling or talent industries could be in the cards. Who am I to burst your dream bubble!

Before choosing a modeling and talent agency to represent you however, there is an even more important first question – “how do I get scouted by a modeling or talent agency?” After all, if you can get scouted, that saves a great deal of time. It should come to no surprise that getting signed to a reputable agency will bolster your porftfolio and name in the business. Agencies also win out, taking on average a 20% commission of all model earnings. Moreover, the brands that associate themselves with the agency also pay the agency and the brands for advertising them and depending on the brand, one can only imagine how much money can be made.

Here are some fun stories – Kate Moss was discovered in JFK airport and pulled down $4.5 million a couple years back; Adriana Lima entered a Ford Models competition and nearly doubled Moss’ earnings; while Gisele Bundchen was spotted in a mall of all places! The 21 highest-paid models (representing nearly $147 million combined) are represented by only 4 agencies worldwide. One of these four agencies – DNA Models, IMG, The Society Management and Women Management – dominate the industry for good reason.

However, don’t fret again if you’re not Adriana or Brad Pitt. Today, a budding talent’s best friend is none other than Instagram. The social media platform is both a launching pad and a revenue generator for tens of thousands of models worldwide. On top of that, agencies will scroll Instagram feeds looking for new talent in music fetivals such as Coachella as well as campaigns with giant hastag followings. Agency insiders love to give tips to newbies seeking to be found, principally because a new model equates to a while lot of revenue.

The first thing insiders recommend is to review agency websites to see what types of models or talent they represent. Everyone from comedians to dancers can be found, and many agencies have a specific look they represent. If you fall into that group, bingo! Second, don’t waste hard earned cash on photo shoots. In fact, a 60 second video typically does the trick, and on an iPhone these days, how hard is that? Third, try and lok natural. We understand, you’re trying to get signed and want to put your best foot forward. That nasty pimple really chose the wrong time to rear its puss-filled head. But don’t cake on a bunch of make-up to cover it up. This might work against you. Wait for the bad aesthetics to blow over and then video yourself.

Fourth, get rid of the middle man. Honestly, who needs them. They’re always in the middle, taking an unnecessary cut, and if you can get into the agency without them all the better. Nowadays middle men are becoming more and more irrelevant so best not to even go down that route. And last but not least, be personable. You might have a great face, a great voice, great dancing feet, but if you’re a dull David or melancholy Mindy, nobody is going to want to be around you. Spark up that inner you, everyone will be happier as a result, especially your bank account.
