Electric Dog Fences

Electric Dog Fences

This is a fun topic. Who doesn’t love seeing pooches run and frolic, free of confined spaces and allowed to do their thing. The Make-A-Wish Foundation in Hawaii granted an amazing wish once upon a time. The child had always wanted to play with a dog on the beach. Throw the tennis ball or stick into the ocean, watch the dog retrieve it, run back to their owner and repeat. This kid did just that and the smile was indescribable.

So, if we can accept that having pooches romp about is great, we also then need to keep them safe. And to do that there are a handful of excellent options out there to make sure their range of movement is open but does not run the risk of them getting hit by a truck. Here are two fabulous options!

PetSafe Wireless Fence Pet Containment System

You likely recognize the name – PetSafe. They are the Coke of pet safety, the Starbucks of keeping pooches and other drooling mammals safe and secure. A renowned company in the pet safety sphere, PetSafe comes strong with a leading wireless fence – the Containment System. Cost effective and has stood the test of time, this is a portable fence that can be hauled literally anywhere and set up in under 2 hours. Those trips to the beach, hiking, camping, anywhere where Rover could theoretically accompany the family where before he was confined to the patio with a squeeze toy, stale pellets and water with grass cuttings. No longer, and the kids will love you for it!

The set comes with a single collar and is pre-set with 5 levels of static correction. There is also a tone-only mode for dogs who are trained and familiar with minding their boundaries. Featuring a transmitter range of 90 feet, if your property is about 200x200 feet, this is a good range as you’ll get a radius of roughly 180 feet. A piece of advice with any setup, regardless of the brand – ensure you are forming a circular boundary because if not you’ll end up with dead spots as the system can be blocked and open these up. Dogs love dead spots, beware.

eXtreme Dog Fence Second Generation

A great, great option for those who like projects. This puppy will need to be installed (that’s what we meant when we said projects), but you can get up to 10 acres of coverage and the area that will be monitored can contain an unlimited number of dogs. But wait, there’s more! A thick, 14-gauge wire and a waterproof collar come standard which is a great deal compared to the competitors. Some of the cons mentioned on this unit is it does not include a manual. This would be an easy fix we think – ask the company to put out some type of instructional material. And number two – the collar lacks quality control at times.

One of the best features however is the system is very lightweight and the receiver collar is ideal for dogs anywhere from 8 pounds and up. It only weighs 1.1 ounces so Sparky will barely know it’s there. Most in-ground fence systems will typically include a 20-gauge wire. This can be bulky and hard to manage. But not here, a 14-gauge wire is standard which is also quite thick and at a professional grade. Fence customization and configuration is also 100% customizable with eXtreme. An extra value added – this set-up works with cats as well. The only issue with them is the collars must be distinct, but you can order them specially.
