Beauty Boxes

Beauty Boxes

A simple concept, but one that has taken the beauty industry by storm. The beauty box, an excellent gift item for the beauty aficionado in your network of family or friends. What is a beauty box you ask? As the name suggests, it’s typically an elegant box jam-packed with awesome skincare, makeup and similar beauty samples. Based on a subscription model, you can opt to receive your own box on a monthly basis or send said box as a gift to someone else. Let’s review the major beauty box players:

BoxyCharm

For roughly $21 per month, with Boxy Charm you’ll receive 5, full-size (not sample) beauty items per month … in a box of course. Beauty tools, makeup, skincare, the items arrive at a scheduled date each month but are random in their selection. In fact, BoxyCharm states that each box has a minimum value of $100. Pretty decent return!

FabFitFun

Super popular on Instagram, this beauty box supplier offers seasonal subscriptions, valued higher than BoxyCharm ($49.99), but you also get much more in each box. A seasonal FabFitFun box comes with 8 to 10 premium products valued at $200 per box. You can hand-pick these or opt for them to be sent randomly.

Birchbox

An original player in the beauty box scene, Birchbox had a virtual monopoly on the industry until BoxyCharm and others moved in to compete. But like any savvy company, they responded by branching out into men’s items, founding BirchboxMan. At a very affordable $10 per month, after you receive a box you can also purchase the items you like directly on their site.

Play! by Sephora

A leader in the beauty world it was only natural that Sephora would expand out into this niche world. While they probably aren’t making much with $10 per month subscriptions (compared to their traditional line of business), each box is “handpicked” by Sephora experts and includes skincare and makeup tips. Of course, the goal here is to get these folks buying more high-priced Sephora items and becoming loyal customers. Kudos to that strategy!

Honest Beauty

If organic is your thing, Honest Beauty is the beauty box for you. Monthly subscribers choose three haircare, makeup or skincare products which are shipped monthly. Clients pay $50 per month, which is certainly pricey, but the items they receive are full-size, not samples, and all natural.

Teak & Twine

Lastly, Teak & Twine, our favorite beauty box company based on the name alone. For $123 per month, clients receive awesome boxes such as “The Spa Day” box with highly-sought after products like Herbivore Botanicals bath salts or lavender lip balm from The Honey Hutch. Teak & Twine is known for their assortment and quality and the ability to custom design boxes. For $123 per month, that better be an option!
