Awnings

Awnings

Ever heard the saying, “it’s all in the awning?” Of course, you haven’t, but as I write it does sound like something my Dad would have said strolling through any home improvement store having just passed by the awning aisle.

This material item likely does not keep you up at night one way or another – worrying about them or excited to buy one. But you know what, think about the last great awning you saw, be it a business or in a home. They look great, don’t they! In fact, a well-placed and designed awning from an aesthetics standpoint can be a real game-changer. But let’s forget about the “pretty factor” for now and get down to the nuts and bolts of this unique piece of tapestry.

We’ll begin with the practical – excellent protection. A well-positioned awning will protect everything from window frames to door casings to wood doors from costly rain and/or precipitation damage. If you’ve experienced said damage without an awning you know how financially annoying this can be. Couple this with the placement of an awning over an open window it can also prevent leaking and windowsill damage.

Second, you will notice over time that cooling costs will drop with awnings installed over a home’s windows. Less sunlight equates to less heat which means that air conditioner doesn’t need to be on full blast any longer during those dog days of June, July and August. As a side-note, a cool awning choice are ventilated awnings, as they prevent heat from being trapped especially around the exterior parts of your windows.

Together with the shade factor and less energy needed to cool the house, interior furnishings benefit a great deal with well-positioned awnings. The sun can do some real damage on fabrics of all shades. Nothing looks worse than dyed-out fabric that’s been absolutely ruined by constant sunlight. The awnings put that whole deal to rest – for good.

This next point is timely, and a great teaching point for the younger generation. Awnings are some of the most environmentally friendly additions you can make to your home or business. Less energy consumption equals less greenhouse gas emissions. Measure your carbon footprint pre and post-awning and you’ll be the environmental envy of the neighborhood.

Last, and perhaps most intriguing from the financial side, is an awning will increase the value of your house or business. They have what’s known as curb appeal – they look great – and in the back anawning can increase the amount of shaded patio space which lends itself to adding tables, chairs and essentially converting the space the awning is covering into a habitable spot.

We’ve stopped your yawning with awning talk, now get to buying!
